Meeting Sensei Reuven Lirov: The Power of Strong

Recap & Introduction

In Part 1 of this series, we met Daniel—a martial arts enthusiast who finally decided to transition from watching Aikido videos online to finding an authentic dojo experience. After plenty of online research, Daniel was drawn to Sensei Reuven Lirov and the community at JJP. This week, we follow Daniel on his first in-person visit, where he discovers how leadership and expertise can shape a student’s journey in Aikido.

Stepping Through the Dojo Doors

The aroma of fresh tatami mats and the faint echo of footwork drills greeted Daniel as he pushed open the dojo door. Though he was slightly nervous—unsure of how he’d be received—he immediately noticed the warm, respectful atmosphere. Students moved with focus, some practicing quietly in corners, others exchanging tips in low voices.

His attention was soon drawn to a figure in the center of the mat: Sensei Reuven Lirov. Despite the intensity of the practice session, Sensei Lirov maintained a calm focus that radiated through the room. As he demonstrated a flowing technique on one of his senior students, Daniel realized he was witnessing something more than just physical mastery; there was a sense of synergy and mutual respect.

First Impressions of Leadership

When class ended, Sensei Lirov approached Daniel with a smile. It wasn’t the distant, formal greeting Daniel had braced himself for; instead, Sensei Lirov asked about Daniel’s journey, goals, and background. The conversation felt genuine. This was the first moment Daniel understood that a true martial arts leader is more than just a skilled technician—they’re a mentor who genuinely cares.

During their talk, Sensei Lirov briefly touched on his lineage in Aikido and how he had trained under teachers who emphasized both technique and philosophy. He mentioned that the purpose of Aikido was not just self-defense but the development of one’s character. This resonated with Daniel, matching everything he’d read about harmony and self-improvement in Aikido.

“The most important part of our role,” Sensei Lirov said, “is guiding students to discover their own strengths while nurturing a spirit of humility.”

Why Leadership & Expertise Matter

1. Setting the Tone: A dojo’s instructor shapes the environment. Sensei Lirov’s approachable leadership style trickled down to the senior students, who in turn made newcomers like Daniel feel at ease. This sense of shared responsibility and camaraderie starts from the top.

2. Transmitting the Art: An instructor with a deep understanding of Aikido’s history and techniques can ensure students learn correctly from day one. Mistakes ingrained early on can be hard to unlearn, so having a teacher with authentic lineage is invaluable.

3. Mentorship and Personal Growth: Beyond physical skills, a great instructor offers guidance on mindset, discipline, and emotional awareness. For Daniel, finding a sensei who genuinely cared about his progress and personal goals gave him the confidence to commit fully.

How Leadership Impacts Your Journey

Over tea with some senior students after class, Daniel heard firsthand how Sensei Lirov’s dedication had helped them push through plateaus, both physically and mentally. They spoke of how he individualized feedback, recognized personal strengths, and gently addressed weaknesses. It was clear that this wasn’t a “one-size-fits-all” approach; Sensei Lirov was invested in the success of each student, from rank beginners to advanced practitioners.

Daniel left that first visit feeling more inspired than ever. He had come seeking skilled instruction, but he found something more: a leader who balanced technical expertise with compassionate mentorship.
